Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA): Working Group on Early Childhood Development (WGECD)

Recognizing the importance of the early years for the development of a child, and acknowledging ECD as an integral part of basic education, the Association for the Development of Africa (ADEA) created the Working Group on Early Childhood Development (WGECD) in 1997.

The WGECD is guided by consultative meetings made up of representatives of African countries who have demonstrated interest in ECD and international agencies and sub-regional organizations with strong commitment to ECD.  The Working Group provides an informal platform to enhance co-operation and collaboration among organizations (national, regional and international) that are actively engaged in ECD promotion in Africa, such as national governments, regional networks, multilateral and bilateral organizations.

Early Child Development Africa (part of the World Bank Group)

This web-site is a knowledge base about early childhood in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is designed to assist policy makers, program managers, and practitioners in promoting the healthy growth and development of young children. The focus is on children from birth to approximately age eight. By combining experiences from the field, research, and policies at various government levels, we hope to invite cross-sectoral information sharing across Africa and beyond.

The web-site is developed in close cooperation with African partners. It provides an overview of the condition of young children in Africa, examples of case studies, and a description of World Bank support to ECD programs in the Africa Region. Emphasis is placed on addressing the needs of children in especially difficult circumstances, such as those affected by HIV/AIDS, orphans, and children with special needs.

Early Childhood Virtual University

The ECDVU is an innovative and multi-faceted approach to addressing Early Childhood Development (ECD) leadership needs in Africa. It is a unique training and capacity building program using distributed learning methods including the Internet, CD-ROM and video-conferencing as well as face-to-face seminars.  Its mission is to further develop African leadership capacity as a key strategy in support of child, family and community well-being and broader social and economic development.
