A World Fit for Children

Events:

  • Commemorative High-Level Plenary Meeting Devoted to the Follow-up to the Outcome of the Special Session on Children 

December 11-12, 2007; New York City

This high-level meeting included a two-day plenary session devoted to the outcome of the Special Session on Children. There were two interactive round tables discussing matters pertaining to the four outcome areas of the WFFC Plan of Action. The first round table examined issues of promoting healthy lives and combating HIV/AIDS. The second round table focussed on providing quality education and protecting against abuse, exploitation, and violence. Other round table themes included ensuring child participation, mobilizing resources, children and climate change, child-friendly policies and legislation, and gender equality. This meeting also discussed the Secretary General's report: “Follow-up to the special session of the General Assembly on children – Report of the Secretary General”. Other events included the launching of the Secretary-General’s report on progress towards the goals of “A World Fit for children”, a town hall meeting and launch of the “Progress for Children” review, and a children's forum.

Progress for children: A world fit for children statistical review provides a wealth of detailed information on progress toward the Millennium Development Goals. It is the sixth in a series of Progress for Children reports released by UNICEF, and the most comprehensive in scope since the series was launched in 2004. The review presents global data that highlights the world’s progress in meeting its commitments for the world’s children. This UNICEF special edition analyses progress toward the Millennium Development Goals in four priority areas for children: promoting healthy lives, providing a quality education, combating HIV and AIDS, and protecting against abuse, exploitation and violence.

This “alternative text,” presents specific text revisions and additions to pending paragraphs of the draft outcome document. Members of the Child Rights Caucus and other non-governmental organizations believe these revisions are needed to strengthen the document and fulfil its purpose.  It was prepared based on broad consultation among NGOs around the world that are devoted to protecting and promoting the rights of children. A list of contributing NGOs and Caucuses is listed on the following page. Additions and revisions to the chairman’s text are underlined. Suggested deletions are stricken through.

Session Title: Establishing Indicators for Early Childhood Care and Development-- Demystifying the Process (May 9, 2002)

This report is based on a NGO side event, in which more than 100 people attended.  Presenters included Dr. Judith Evans, Dr. Kyle D. Pruett, and Dr. Janet Brown.  The aforementioned presenters explored issues of child development status and the process of establishing indicators.  In addition, they provided a country example (i.e., Jamaica).  The event concluded with a question and comment period.   

Statement prepared by The Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development (May 2001)

The purpose of this statement is to strengthen the position of Early Childhood Care and Development in both the Global Movement for Children’s Rallying Call and the Outcome Document, A World Fit For Children, with regards to young children, their families, caregivers and communities.  This statement examines areas of Early Childhood Care for Development (ECCD), What is a World Fit for Children?, Beyond Child Survival, ECCD: the Foundation for All Later Learning, and ECCD: A Fair Start for Every Child.  The statement concludes with two appendices outlining the CGECCD's support for the remaining points of the Rallying Call, and the goal and two strategies related to ECCD in the draft outcome document, A World Fit for Children.

Early Childhood Care and Education: Supporting Children’s Development and Early Learning through National Development Plans (May 8, 2002)

This panel addresses the first target set in the Outcome Document: achieving quality education, underscoring the importance of early childhood care and its role in national development.  The presenters also highlight country programming examples and case studies from the Philippines, Senegal, and internationally (Sesame Workshop).
