War Affected Children

"Why is it that we can mobilize vast resources to fund wars, but we cannot mobilize adequate funds to protect children throughout the world?"

Graça Machel

From conflict to peace building:  The power of early childhood initiatives--Lessons from around the world  (Connolly, P.,  Hayden, J., & Levin, D., October 2007).  This book examines the effects of conflict on young children, their families, and their communities. Early childhood professionals share stories and experiences from around the world, illustrating hope, encouragement, and resilience in working with children and families affected by conflict. Moreover, the stories demonstrate the power of the early years sector, not only as a foundation stone upon which to re-build communities, but also as a vehicle for peace building. From conflict to peace building: The power of early childhood initiatives--Lessons from around the world highlights countries such as, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chad, Colombia, Nepal, Northern Ireland, Palestine, and the United States.

This study laid the foundation for the appointment of a Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict and highlighted the need to develop new international legal norms and standards and strengthen existing ones.

State of the World's Mothers - Protecting Children in War and Conflict

In commemoration of Mother’s Day, this year’s State of the World’s Mothers report focuses on the tens of millions of mothers and children whose lives have been shattered by armed conflict, bringing attention to critical protection needs in war-torn communities around the world. The report suggests actions required to support women who are raising the world’s future generations under the most horrific conditions imaginable, and to shield children from the brutal excesses of war.
